A Multi-Genre Writing Experience

Join Mrs. Groden this summer to engage in a wide range of writing, across the genres. This is a class for those who love to write and be creative. At the start of the course, students will choose a topic of interest (music, art, film, food, sports, animals, etc.). Throughout the six classes, students will explore their chosen topic through different writing genres.

Genres include:
a) Persuasive Essay writing
b) Poetry/Recipes
c) Songs/Raps
d) Short stories
e) Picture book/Film/Art
f) Monologues

This two hour class will be divided in half. The first part will be dedicated to learning about a specific genre. The second part of the course will be devoted to writing your individual piece in the specific genre.

Instructor: Ms Jan Groden

Jan Groden has been teaching for nine years. She earned her undergraduate degree from Skidmore college with a double major in English and Theatre. Jan received her Masters Degree in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She started her education career in public school, teaching English, Math, and History. Following her time in public school, Jan taught for three years at a small private school in Harlem, teaching Reason and Rhetoric (non-fiction reading and writing skills), before joining the Portledge School faculty. She currently teaches 7th and 8th grade English and directs the middle school shows. Prior to teaching, Jan was an actress in NYC for six years
